ukiyo 浮世, literally "Floating World": a term referring to the hedonistic lifestyle that arose in urban districts during Japan’s Edo Period (1615-1868). The movement’s artists were dedicated to capturing scenes & pleasures found in everyday life. By contrast, the homophone ukiyo originates as a Buddhist concept (憂き世, "Sorrowful World") describing the sadness (uki) of life (yo); the eternal cycle of death and rebirth.
